CaveBooks, founded in 1981 as a publishing affiliate of the Cave Research Foundation, is the largest publisher of books on caves, karst, and speleology in the world. The staff consists entirely of volunteers. Thus our costs are low, which means we can keep our prices low.
We aim for high standards in scientific publications, for clarity and drama in books on cave exploration, and for literate and readable fiction. For example, the new edition of SPELEOLOGY: CAVES AND THE CAVE ENVIRONMENT by George Moore and Nicholas Sullivan was both a selection of the Science Book Club, and is used widely as a textbook in high schools and colleges. And two volumes of reference and documentation are highly readable: ATLAS: GREAT CAVES OF THE WORLD by Paul Courbon, Claude Chabert, Peter Bosted, and Karen Lindsley; and A GUIDE TO THE SPELEOLOGICAL LITERATURE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE 1794-1996 by Diana Northup, Emily Mobley, Kenneth Ingham, and William Mixon.
For cave adventure, you cannot beat DEEP SECRETS: THE DISCOVERY AND EXPLORATION OF LECHUGUILLA CAVE by Stephen Reames, Lawrence Fish, Paul Berger, and Patricia Kambesis. Lechuguilla is one of the most spectacular caves in the world, and the story of its growth from an entrance dug into a blowhole in the side of a hill to over 60 miles in length is a cave explorer's dream come true.
We have reprinted classic cave books including: Norbert Casteret's TEN YEARS UNDER THE EARTH, Pierre Chevalier's SUBTERRANEAN CLIMBERS, Robert de Joly's MEMOIRS OF A SPELEOLOGIST, and Patty Jo Watson's ARCHEOLOGY OF THE MAMMOTH CAVE AREA. And we have in print the ANNUAL REPORTS of the scientific work of the Cave Research Foundation from 1957 to 1997. We also publish maps of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky; of Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico; and of other caves.
Recently we published the first and only feminist novel of cave adventure: EMERGENCE by Marian McConnell.
